WHAT IS SLQB?
Super Literacy Quiz Bowl (“SLQB”) is a fast-paced trivia game designed to promote reading, to showcase outstanding books, and to imbue reading with fun and excitement. SLQB is open to Pennekamp 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, with specific reading lists for each grade. Students in the same grade level compete in small randomly-selected teams representing their class. One 45-minute competition per grade level is held in February, during the school day, in the Pennekamp Cafeteria. Audience members attend the game to cheer on their classmates (and parents can attend, too!). SLQB reading lists include picture books and chapter-length books, fiction and nonfiction. The questions are based on content clearly stated in the reading list books, but not likely to be a part of a student's common knowledge. The trivia quiz game is played on school iPads using the Kahoot! app. Your student will be familiar with the multiple choice trivia app by the time the SLQB is played in February. SLQB reading lists are announced at the start of the Pennekamp Read-a-thon during class library time, students will be briefed on SLQB and will have time to ask questions. Students are encouraged to read SLQB books for their reading log “minutes.”
School libraries play a central role in SLQB. The reading list books are available for use in the library or for check out, and the library resource specialist is the on-campus representative of the program. The Manhattan Beach public library also keeps copies of the reading list books on hand for circulation. Parents can also purchase a copy of the books (often sharing them between families).
There is no minimum number of books that a student must read to participate, but students are encouraged to read at least 9 of the 15 books on their grade’s reading list. Competition dates and times will be announced when registration forms are made available in December. All students who wish to participate must turn in a signed registration form. Registration forms will be available as an attachment in a Room Parent email and in the library.
SLQB began at Pennekamp in 2017. Thanks to a generous MBEF Grant, SLQB was played at all five MBUSD elementary schools last year, with 300 students participating districtwide!
