Super Literacy Quiz Bowl

Super Literacy Quiz Bowl (SLQB) is a fast-paced trivia game about books that promotes
student reading, comprehension, and teamwork.

SLQB starts with the announcement of the reading lists. Each grade has its own list, made
up of 10 picture books and 3-5 chapter books. The lists are carefully curated to include
exemplary books on diverse topics that students enjoy reading. New books are added every
year, but some books stay on the lists from year to year (to make the best use of resources
invested in the previous years' lists). Students continue reading and reviewing as many
books as they can right up to the competition.

For SLQB, students read to comprehend and remember what they have read. Anything in the reading-list books may be included in the questions, including the main text, maps, illustrations, captions, as well as front matter (such as a prologue) and back matter (such as an author’s note, timeline, or glossary). Students who read the reading-list books are likely to know the answers; without reading the books, "common knowledge" will rarely be enough.

Finally, it's time for the competition! Each participating class comes to the quiz bowl event.
Students can sign up to be on a team or cheer from the audience. Teams are
made up of students from the same class. Team members have a few moments to discuss
each question before choosing their answer. Each team competes to win the top prize,
which is awarded to and enjoyed by their whole class.

Copies of the SLQB reading-list books are available at your school library and the
Manhattan Beach Public Library. SLQB is generously funded by MBEF. If you have any questions or comments regarding Super Literacy Quiz Bowl, please email [email protected].
